The cost-per-wear rule that makes expensive clothes cheaper
A $290 pair of boots can be cheaper than a $60 pair. This is not a trick of accounting — it is just division, done honestly. Cost per wear (CPW) is the single most useful number in personal style, and once you start computing it, “expensive” and “cheap” stop meaning what the price tag says.
The formula
Cost per wear = price ÷ number of times you wear it.
That’s the whole calculator. A $290 coat worn 200 winter days costs $1.45 per wear. A $58 coat worn twice a season across three seasons — nine wears total — costs $6.44 per wear. Per actual use, the “expensive” coat is four times cheaper.
The reason this works on our brains where willpower doesn’t: it converts a one-time pain (the checkout) into a per-use value (like renting). Once you frame purchases as rentals-from-yourself, the question changes from “can I afford $290?” to “is this worth ~$1.50 every time I get dressed for winter?” — which is a much easier yes or no.
Five worked examples
1. The workhorse trench — $180 / 150 wears → $1.20/wear Spring and autumn outerwear, roughly 75 days a year for two years. Every commute, every drizzly errand. This is the profile of a true staple: boring in a spreadsheet, brilliant on your back.
2. The occasion dress — $210 / 4 wears → $52.50/wear Wedding season, formal events. Beautifully made, worn rarely by definition. CPW doesn’t say “don’t buy it”; it says know what you’re paying. At $52/wear, maybe rent the next one instead — rental sits near $40–60 per event, so at four-or-fewer lifetime wears they tie, and renting wins below that.
3. The fast-fashion blazer — $34 / 3 wears → $11.33/wear Bought for a conference, seam puckered by wash three. This is the purchase CPW was born to expose: cheap by tag, among the most expensive garments you’ve ever owned per use.
4. Daily jeans — $95 / 300 wears → $0.32/wear The quiet champion. Anything worn multiple times weekly amortizes almost instantly; even a $400 raw-denim pair drops under $1.35/wear within eighteen months of honest rotation.
5. The sale “steal” — $130 marked down from $260 / 2 wears → $65/wear Discounts seduce you into valuing the discount, not the garment. Halve the price of something you won’t wear and you’ve doubled the fool’s discount — final cost per use stays brutal.

Rank those by CPW — not by tag — and your wardrobe’s real hierarchy appears. Notice the “$34 blazer” sitting above the “$210 dress”? Tag prices had it backwards.
The thresholds that make decisions easy
You don’t need spreadsheets for every item. Three benchmark numbers do most of the work:
- $10/wear ceiling. Above this, only justified by sentiment (wedding dress) or genuine need.
- $2–5/wear target. Where regular wardrobe pieces should land within their first year of life.
- Sub-$1 ambition. Reserved for pieces worn weekly or more: shoes, denim, base layers, bags.
Two rules keep estimates honest:
Rule 1 — forecast with realism, not optimism. Estimate wears per month × months kept, and halve whatever feels exciting. If your gut says “every week,” you’ll wear it monthly. Use that.

What is a good cost per wear? Under $5 is respectable for everyday clothing; under $1 is excellent and typical only for pieces worn weekly+. Formalwear plays by different rules — event wear commonly runs $30–60/wear, which is why short-life occasions often suit renting instead of owning.
Does cost per wear apply to cheap clothes too? Especially to cheap clothes. Low tags hide high CPWs — the $12 tee worn once out-costs the $90 shirt worn sixty times ($12 vs $1.50). Cheap-and-unworn is the most expensive category in your closet, measured properly.
How many wears until an item pays off? Divide its price by your personal threshold. At a $2/wear bar, a $100 piece needs 50 wears (~once a week for a year) to qualify as bought well. At $1/wear ambitions, double it.
What about durability — doesn’t quality change the math? Yes, and it argues for spending more where wear counts are high: a $180 pair lasting 300 wears beats two $70 pairs lasting 120 each ($0.60 vs $1.17). Quality earns its premium exactly where the denominator grows largest.
