It subtracts what an item will realistically resell for from its price before dividing by wears: (price − resale value) ÷ times worn. A $220 coat that resells for $80 after 200 wears cost $0.70 per wear — the resale market paid for almost two-thirds of the coat.
Check recently sold listings (not asking prices) for the same brand and condition on the resale platform you would actually use, then knock off the platform fee. For everyday high-street pieces, assume near zero — that honesty is what makes the number useful.
In rough order: sought-after denim, quality leather boots and bags, classic wool coats, and hyped sneakers. Fast-fashion blends and altered tailoring resell for close to nothing — for those, plain cost per wear is the honest metric.
