Closet challenge · One season (~3 months)

The 30-Piece Capsule

One season, 30 core pieces, everything inter-combines.

The rules

  1. Build a 30-piece core capsule: tops, bottoms, layers, dresses, shoes.
  2. Exclude underwear, sleepwear, gym-only kit, and specialty outerwear.
  3. Every piece must pair with at least 3 others in the capsule.
  4. One neutral base + two accent colors maximum, or interchangeability dies.
  5. Live in it for the season; log outfits; adjust next season, do not expand.

Why it works

A 30-piece capsule works on arithmetic: even modest counts (8 tops, 6 bottoms, 3 shoes, 3 layers) yield 400+ complete looks. The discipline is not owning less — it is owning nothing that pairs with nothing.

Armoiria runs this challenge natively — streaks, outfit logs, and wear counts that make the checklist fill itself: armoiria://challenges?preset=capsule-30

The checklist

Print it, stick it inside the closet door, tick as you go.

  • Counted the core pieces (tops, bottoms, layers, dresses, shoes only)
  • Chose one neutral base and two accents
  • Verified every piece pairs with 3+ others
  • Removed the orphans that failed the 3-pairings test
  • Filled gaps with intentional buys only (max 3 per season)
  • Logged outfits for 2 weeks to confirm coverage
  • Reviewed at season end: what to swap, not add

Frequently asked questions

Is 30 a hard number?

It is a target that forces trade-offs. 27 or 33 both work; 50 is a closet, not a capsule. The count matters less than the 3-pairings rule.

What about work clothes vs weekend clothes?

Choose pieces that drift: a blazer works at work over a tee, and the same tee dresses down with jeans. Formal-only items are the first orphans.
